Artist Statement:
I have been working with wood for over 30 years. In making sculpture, it allows
for endless forms and varied textures and colors. Wood can be manipulated in many
different ways: shaped, carved, and constructed. And working with wood feels good
and smells good.
Much of my early work was fairly minimal, geometric and angular. More recently
I’ve become fascinated by the idea of taking wood and making it bend and curve
in ways that seem counter-intuitive to the material itself. During the process
of building a piece of sculpture, I start with an initial idea, but allow it to
evolve in ways that often yield surprising and unexpected results. I like making
forms with wood that are pleasing to the eye but also complex and challenging.
